They'll muddle along just fine so long as they avoid one another. An excellent plan…until a fire forces Ian into the castle—and Robert's personal space.Ian Cameron has worked for everything he owns, unlike spoiled Robert Townsend. And he may not have friends, but he has the Highlands and the stars, and what more could he really need? But when a guest's stolen possession appears in his room, he doesn't have much choice but to admit to the handsome and aggravatingly charming Townsend brother that he needs help. To solve this mystery, they'll have to put aside their differences. And as Ian learns more about Robert, he'll have to guard his heart…or it may be the next thing stolen. Book A Scot's Surrender (The Townsends Book 3) Review :

The summary claimed each book was a standalone, so I figured I’d just read this one rather than buy the whole series. I think the standalone thing was valid; it was clear there were bits of backstory about the side characters that I didn’t have, but it wasn’t enough to make me feel like I was really missing anything. I wonder if the two previous books might not have increased my connection to the characters, but that’s it.This book wasn’t good, it wasn’t bad. The writing was fine, not great but I’ve no complaints, and I appreciated pattens being mentioned (though I’m not sure if they were still in use?). I think my biggest problem was with the first chapter, and that’s hardly an auspicious way to begin. The summary describes how Robert is determined to keep things running in his brother’s absence and to stay away from the too-attractive factor until he’s forced to take him in. That’s half the summary, and by consequence it seems like the book should be about half taken up by those events. Instead, the first chapter starts with a bare-bones outline of events that reads like a particularly crummy: lightning strikes Ian’s house, it burns down, he moves in, there’s a flood, travelers take refuge in the house. That’s the beginning of the first chapter, and in less than a page the entire first half of the summary is out of the way. I understand wanting to get the backstory out of the way and just write the bit you’re excited about, it’s certainly something I’ve been guilty of myself, but it was really just bad/lazy writing cramming all the backstory into an unelaborated list of events. That was really my only complaint, but since it was the first thing I read it really didn’t set things off on a good foot. The characters were fine, the mystery a bit frivolous but it drove the plot; my only other possible protest would be that there’s really only two sex scenes, not much for a novel-length book, but that’s simply a difference in...style I suppose, or preference. The cover photo is the same one used on one of Jordan Hawk’s Hex novels, I always think that’s a bit funny.
This is a wonderful M/M slow burn with tantalizing romantic tension. Robert and Ian come from very different worlds. Initial dislike slowly turned to attraction at they got to know and understand each other. They have an amazing dynamic between them: some anger, some needling, but as the relationship develops, it is not only sexy, but also full of vulnerability as they share deeply personal thoughts and memories and interests. Their story is emotional and hot, but also well written. The characters felt very real, and not soap operaish or sappy.Whether intended or not, one of the MCs also demonstrated very painful and thoughtless bias against someone who seemed to be bi and demisexual. It was hard to read, knowing I’d have to forgive this, even with the understanding that this was a different time and the MC had some personal pain that caused that reaction. I felt that was not adequately addressed, which made it feel as if only one was doing the heavy lifting in the relationship. Other than that, it was a wonderful love story with a very happy ending.
