So I thought I would give the mafia trope a try, being an avid fan of romance novels. It looked like it had great reviews.I feel like this is a trick and everyone here is in on it. I hope that this really isn't what the mafia trope is because this was so bad it made me never want to try again.So the main character, Emma, gets raped -repeatedly- by this main male character Dmitri. He forces her into his home, rapes her twice, before she escapes. How could it possibly get worse than that in the first chapter?Well, Emma makes it home and tells her roommate. They don't go to a clinic or the police. Nooooo.Emma talks to her roommate as if her whole experience that just happened to her was a grand romantic sexual escapade. They talk like girls giggling over a random consent given hookup. And the roommate calls her a slut -jokingly? - and Emma is all like, you convinced me this forced sex thing was great! Girl, you ran away in a panic from him for a reason, wtf. They never even mention the R word.So why did I keep reading after that, you might be thinking to yourself right now? I'm clearly masochistic. And I guess I wanted to know if this disgusting "hero" had any redeeming qualities. I mean, he is the "hero" in the book and I am still just in the first chapters of this thing so he has to come back.But he didn't redeem himself. He stalked her. Tracked her down. Trapped her in the most ironic hypocritical fashion. Sexually assaulted her, then forced her into a relationship with him and stripped her of her dignity and rights.Then, as the topper of a cherry on this I can't even call it a sundae, she apologizes to him and pretty much says her previous rapes were her fault. Of course she doesn't see them as rapes, just her bad choices that led to an adventure just like her books?I stopped reading at that. Unlike Emma, my dignity hasn't been stripped away. I can't even begin to wrap my head around how this book got such glowing reviews when literally the first chapter is nothing but rape. If rape is your kink you will love this book, but what could have been a promising storyline and other character development was a huge disappointment.
